San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 26, 2012
Cheap-Neckties.com, a prominent online tie retailer, has begun publishing a series of articles highlighting key fashion icons throughout history entitled Icons from the Past. The website has already published pieces on such historic public figures as Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Cary Grant among others, and plans to continue on with the series in the coming weeks and months.
“The Icons from the Past series has been immensely popular thus far,” says Cheap-Neckties.com founder Hendrik Pohl. “We’re off to a great start with this, and have no plans for slowing down anytime soon. We’re looking to expand upon the list of individuals that we’ve focused on thus far, and will likely highlight the style of people such as Yves Saint Laurent, Steve McQueen and Beau Brummell, the father of the modern men’s suit.”
Icons from the Past highlights key aspects of the style of some of the most fashionable men in history. In addition to the clothes they wore, each individual’s personality, hairstyle and overall fashion sense is picked apart and explained in detail. The pieces also include a “takeaway” section for the modern man who might choose to emulate the style of each celebrity.
“It’s an unfortunate fact that many of today’s men have completely lost their sartorial touch, and that convenience seems to have taken precedent over style and elegance,” says Pohl. “We see the Icons from the Past series as being a direct response to this, and are trying to show our readers that it really doesn’t have to be difficult to dress like a celebrity. Although a lot of the individuals that we highlight in this series are no longer alive, there are countless elements of style that modern men can pick up on and incorporate into their own look.”
The celebrities highlighted in the series range from musicians to actors, and even politicians. The common thread between each individual is that they all served to be huge influences on modern-day men’s fashion, and were mostly celebrated for their style during their time in the spotlight.
“These are some of the best-dressed people to ever walk the earth,” says Pohl, “and we’re delighted to highlight what made them stand apart from the crowd. Our readers tend to be fashion-forward, and are always looking for tips on how to push their style in the right direction. The Icons from the Past series is designed to do just that, and shows quite a bit of promise.

Style matters: Annapolis woman helps men find right suit fit
But Brennan didn’t realize his work shirts and jackets were too big around the underarm. The sleeves on his left wrist didn’t fit properly, so he looked awkward when he checked his wristwatch.
He hadn’t noticed his fashion missteps until he got the help of an Annapolis style consultant who sells custom shirts and suits from J. Hilburn, an online men’s clothier. Through Tatiana Melo, Brennan has learned to seek the tapered look.
“I’m much more critical of the clothes I wear in the sense of ‘what does it mean to have a shirt that fits?’” said Brennan, a Virginia resident. He is in the process of building up his wardrobe. “It’s more tapered. People go ‘wow, have you been in the gym?’ It’s not that my physique has changed; my clothes compliment me better.”
Finding the proper fit is an age old dilemma that has helped keep tailors in business. Now, there are online services that can achieve similar results. Shoppers can input their sizes or measurements at websites like Sizewand.com and My Virtual Model. Those sites then try to match buyers with a proper fitting wardrobe. J. Hilburn’s custom shirts range from $89 to $159.
At Annapolis-based Sharon’s Alterations Consignment, the customers are mostly female. But the male customers have specific needs when it comes to suits. Owner Sharon Polacek often advises them to look for suits that are fitted well through the shoulders with longer sleeves, because that can be altered.
“It’s difficult to lengthen the sleeves because the old press lines are going to show,” Polacek said. “That’s what I tell gentlemen. If you have a pretty good fit through the shoulders, it’s always better to buy it too big than too small. You can always take it in; you can’t always let it out.”
Each week, Melo has about six meetings with different clients. Her clientele is made up of professional men — lawyers, bankers and salesmen.
On her first meeting with a new client, she’ll take his measurements and enter them into the J. Hilburn database. Then she’ll talk to him about how he likes his clothes to fit and show fabric samples of the custom shirts. She’ll return to see how the shirts fit and suggest other options. She is paid on commission of whatever she sells.
“Men do have the same problems (women) do, and there are not many options out there,” Melo said. “I bring that service to them. They don’t have to go out shopping. Generally, they don’t enjoy doing that, but they have to because they need to look good.”
Melo learned about customizing clothing at the Maryland Academy of Couture Arts in Baltimore. She originally planned to do an internship at a tailor shop, when a colleague told her about J. Hilburn. She began working with the company in July.
Now, Melo has about 50 clients she gained largely through referrals. Aside from the custom shirts, other popular items are the $525 Performance Navy Blazer. The suits start at $600.
Even though Melo works as a style consultant, she’s never been attached to name brands. She said she opts for style and quality.
“To me, clothes are a language,” Melo said in an email. “(They’re) a window to people’s personality that goes beyond just first impression. It’s a representation of how we feel about ourselves … and when it’s done purely out of vanity, that’s also evident.”
